When stainless steel fittings contact aluminium in a saltwater environment, a chemical reaction can occur, leading to corrosion and electrolysis. If a 12V power supply is present and the stainless components are not completely insulated from the aluminium hull, deck, or dash, electrolysis can quickly damage critical components — from your outboard leg to the aluminium structure of your boat.
